These two "onion" illustrations will be scanned and added shortly.

MODEL OF THE INDIVIDUAL

The descriptive information for the levels in Table I present a view of each “pure” level’s characteristics. The individual, being unique and complex, can be envisioned as layer after layer of levels building out from the Automatic (A-N) core. The successive layers are not uniform, but rather wrinkled and of thicknesses varying from zero to significant. Also the layers are plastic in that they flow under stress (becoming thinner and thinner as pushed against), are flexible, and are slowly undergoing dynamic adjustment. The mode of the individual being is shown as a  “wrinkled, plastic onion” in Figure 2 below.

Figure 2.1 presents a model of an individual who has attained the Egocentric   (C-P) level as the “highest” level of existence. However, there are situations (certain environments or conditions-of-existence) where this individual would exhibit “lower” level behavior, i.e. the family-home “wrinkle”. Noted that this person would not show Saintly or Cognitive behavior in any situation. Such behavior is not possible as the levels above Egocentric do not now exist. Therefore, we would expect responses to stimuli that are indicative of the Egocentric through Automatic levels, depending on the particular situation or are stimulated.

In Figure 2.2 is a representation of a person having the Personalistic (F-S) as the “highest” level operating. In this individual’s work-professional environment the F-S level is fully operant. As a manager this person would, in seeking subordinate acceptance and approval, naturally tend to an open, participative, non-directive managerial style. This same person, however, holds a rigid, prescriptive view as to the “order-of-things” (D-Q) in regard to the religious-values area and the “group” at work better not transgress therein. This same person in sports participation gives and expects no mercy. The total purpose here is to win, there is no polite sportsmanship shown, no concern to others, no concern for rules if they can be evaded, and no concern for gamesmanship – it is all or nothing at the Egocentric level (C-P).
